Barat Academy Pauses In-Person Operations for 2023-24 in Chesterfield;
Builds on 10-Year International Foundation to Expand Innovative Global Education
CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (April 28, 2023) --- Barat Academy, the only Catholic co-ed high school in St. Louis offering single-gender classes, will pause in-person school operations for the 2023-24 academic year. The decision affects 20 local students. The school will vacate leased facilities at 17815 Wild Horse Creek Road in June.
Barat Academy’s focus will shift to expanding innovative global education on the foundation of a decade of educating international students.
“The COVID pandemic taught educators a great deal about the industrial age model of education and inspired new models of education that better match today’s students and prepare them far better for careers in a fast-changing world,” said Barat Academy President Debby Watson. “Our decade of experience in delivering both in-person and virtual education to students all over the world gives us a jumpstart on strategies for success as we expand our service to international students and extend the benefits to a greater array of U.S. students.”
Since opening with its first freshman class in 2007, Barat Academy has graduated 477 students. At the end of this school year, Barat Academy will have awarded about 160 – or about one-third – of its total high school diplomas to international students. The growing demand for innovative global education is reflected in Barat Academy’s success in attracting students from Europe, Asia and Central America.
Citing explosive growth in online tutoring and classes, Watson said Barat Academy’s unique teaching and learning model is a key differentiator. “Virtual education opportunities now focus solely on education,” she said. “The Barat Academy difference is our proven ability to build community within virtual spaces.”
Barat Academy is rooted in the traditions of the Sacred Heart. It was named for St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, who established the Society of the Sacred Heart Catholic religious congregation in 1800 to reveal the love of God in the world. Its educational approach fosters the worth of each student’s intellect and the importance of creating caring citizens who are lifelong learners.
School leaders and staff are working with parents to facilitate local students’ consideration of other options for the next academic year. Nontraditional students, locally and nationally, will be able to supplement their learning with virtual Barat Academy classes.
“Our students benefit from our unique, customized approach, which amplifies educational success and celebrates the learning and social styles of each student within the framework of our Catholic spirituality,” said Watson. “Our graduates apply the strengths they’ve gained here to pursue their dreams and to contribute their greatness to our world. We are working to ensure our current students in Chesterfield sustain their educational progress as we also determine the best path to meet strong demand for innovative global education among both U.S. and international students.”
